I've finally decided to take the plunge and schedule an energy assessment with Energize New York. I’ve used every excuse in the book to put it off: “I just have to clean out the attic first,” and “I wouldn’t know where to begin."
”My husband and I are your typical Westchester residents. We moved to here in 2000 after falling in love with our old 1920’s cottage in the heart of town, just a short walk to the elementary school and shops. The original part of our house was built in 1926 with a second floor addition built in 2003 so the result is that half our house is cozy and warm, and the other half has a constant breeze blowing through it from October to March.
We are chronic “do-it-yourself-er’s” and procrastinators which inevitably leads to a pile of unfinished projects. In fact, we’ve perfected the “Apology Tour” when friends come over. “Pay no attention to the half-done crown molding and partially painted ceiling.” A little handyman self-deprecating humor goes a long way.
So you can imagine that making the decision to bring a contractor through our house for a “warts and all” tour is a bit hard to swallow. But with winter around the corner (can you say Polar Vortex?) we knew it was time to seal up the drafts, lower our heating bills, and make sure our home was working as efficiently as possible. Besides, do we really want our insecurities to stand in the way of saving money and a more comfortable home?
We’ve decided to suck it up and put on our big boy pants and move ahead with having our assessment done. My first step was to go online at EnergizeNY.org and click on sign up. In all of ten minutes I was done with my application! That was it; my coffee didn’t have a chance to get cold. No paperwork, nothing to sign. Honestly, signing my kids up for summer camp took longer. I’m keeping my eye out for my official approval.
